Workplace air quality is governed by several key legislations to ensure the health and safety of employees. The primary legislation that addresses this issue is the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005. Under this act, employers in Ireland have a duty to provide a safe working environment, including maintaining adequate air quality standards and preventing exposure to hazardous substances.

Additionally, the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Chemical Agents) Regulations 2001 and the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Carcinogens) Regulations 2001 specifically address the control of chemical agents and carcinogens in the workplace. These regulations set out requirements for risk assessments, control measures, monitoring, and exposure limits to protect workers from the adverse effects of hazardous substances.

Furthermore, the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 provide more specific guidance on controlling exposure to hazardous substances, including requirements for air monitoring, control measures such as ventilation systems, and the provision of personal protective equipment.
